Barber saw Roman De Angelis dominate both Platinum Cup races, Alan Metni score his first overall top-five result and his second consecutive win in the Platinum Masters. The Barber events also proved positive with Kurt Fazekas scoring his first victory of the season in Gold Class and the Kelly-Moss team can’t help but look forward to the next two rounds this weekend at Mid-Ohio.
The team has been working tirelessly prepping cars ahead of Mid-Ohio testing this afternoon with the official event getting underway Friday and ending Sunday. What goes into prep ahead of a race? The basics include a comprehensive nut and bolt check of the car from front to back and top to bottom. Every square inch is cleaned and inspected to insure the safety and proper operation of all pieces. All worn parts are replaced like brake pads or tires for example and body panels that might have sustained any light damage are repaired or replaced too. Fluids are checked and topped off and testing is done in the week leading up to the race so the team can fine tune chassis setups. As for the drivers, when they are not behind the wheel, their advanced simulator setups at home help them prepare ahead of an event.
Something you can’t predict but can prepare for is weather. This weekend looks to be a mix of good and bad with practice forecasts calling for rain and shine. Rain has been forecasted for Round 3 and a potential for sunny skies for Round 4. Unpredictable weather challenges both driver and team having to prepare for all conditions and switch on the fly, but it’s what testing is for and the team is prepared. Of course, extra rain tires will be on hand just in case.
Running both weekend races are drivers Roman De Angelis (Platinum), David Brule (Platinum Masters), Scott Welham (Platinum Masters), Alan Metni (Platinum Masters), and Kurt Fazekas (Gold). All are all looking for strong results to garner Championship points with both De Angelis and Metni currently sitting in 1st and 5th in the Platinum class respectively and Kurt Fazekas leading the Gold Driver Championship. Kelly-Moss also holds the top spot in overall gold and platinum team points.
The weekend includes two, 45-minute GT3 Cup Challenge USA races – the first at 4:20 p.m. ET on Saturday and the other at 11 a.m. ET Sunday. Both races will be streamed live on IMSA.tv, with tape-delayed television coverage airing on NBCSN at 1 p.m. ET on Monday, May 13.
