MADISON, Wis. (July 28, 2015) – In what is becoming standard practice for Kelly Moss Motorsports, the team will pull double-duty this weekend with participants in both Pirelli World Challenge Championship GT Cup presented by MOMO and the Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA series.
Colin Thompson will lead Kelly Moss to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course to compete on the scenic, 2.4-mile, 15-turn circuit for Rounds 12 and 13 of PWC GT Cup. The series will co-headline with the Verizon IndyCar Series during the Honda Indy 200 race weekend.
The Mid-Ohio road course offers a little of everything — elevation changes, speedy, flowing and tight corners, a narrow, 40-foot-wide racing ribbon and a challenging entry to pit lane.
He will be joined by his TruSpeed Autosport partnership teammates, Sloan Urry and Phil Fogg Jr.
The trio will have one 30-minute practice Friday, July 31 before qualifying Saturday morning, Aug. 1. The first race is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. (ET) Saturday, Aug. 1 with the second race at noon Sunday. Both races are run in conjunction with the PWC GT and GTA classes.
While Thompson and the team aim for their 10th win of the PWC GT Cup season, Kelly Moss also will set up shop at its home track, Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, only 108 miles northeast of the Kelly Moss headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin.
Racing for Kelly Moss will be Rene Robichaud, Kurt Fazekas, Dan Weyland, Jesse Lazare, Paul Barnhart III, Chris Wally and Jay Patel.
Wally made his Pirelli Drivers Cup debut last year at the Road America event. He swept the double-header weekend, winning both races. He will look to defend his two wins with another repeat performance this weekend.
The series features four Porsche GT3 Cup car classes: the Diamond Class (2014-2015, 991 GT3 Cup models), Platinum Class (2010-2013, 997 GT3 Cup), Gold Class (2006-2009, 997 GT3 Cup), and the Silver Class (2000-2005, 996 GT3 Cup).
The series was started in 2007 by Competent Motorsport. In 2012, it partnered with Porsche Motorsports North America to become the 22nd one-make platform series in the world for Porsche.
The events are race weekends that include six practice sessions and two, 45-minute sprint races. The objective is to create competitive seat time to further educate and develop the driver’s race craft.
The event will also provide extra seat time for Kelly Moss’ Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama participants Weyland, Lazare, Patel and Fazekas in preparation for Rounds 9 and 10 next weekend at Road America.
Race 1 is scheduled for 4:35 p.m. (CT) Saturday, Aug. 1, with Race 2 at 12:25 p.m. Sunday.
