SONOMA, Calif. (Sept. 2, 2015) – Mark another one down in the win column for Colin Thompson and Kelly Moss Motorsports.
Thompson and the Kelly Moss team picked up a third-place finish and a victory in Rounds 16 and 17, respectively, in the Pirelli World Challenge Championship GT Cup presented by MOMO Motorsport Aug. 28-30 at Sonoma Raceway.
The double-podium weekend comes just a week after Thompson clinched the drivers’ championship – his second title in two years – and Kelly Moss clinched the team championship.
Thompson started on pole in Round 16 at the 2.52-mile, 12-turn road course located at Sears Point in the southern Sonoma Mountains in Sonoma, California. At the start, Alec Udell challenged Thompson and took the lead through Turn 1. Thompson regained the top position on the third lap and retained it until the end of the race.
As the race neared its completion, Thompson went off track at Turn 9. Udell claimed the victory, and Thompson recovered to take home third place.
After claiming the quickest lap in Round 16, Thompson once again started on pole for Round 17. An incident in Turn 2 at the start of the GT race forced the GT Cup field to start under yellow with Thompson in the lead.
He led from flag to flag to claim the 4.954-second victory, his 12th of the season.
“I can’t ask for anything more from Jeff Stone and the Kelly Moss Motorsport boys,” Thompson said. “They give me the car to win every single weekend, and with a third yesterday and first today, it is a good weekend. We’ve got to be proud with what we have done with the Porsche, and I’m looking forward to the finale at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.”
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is the final destination for the 2015 Pirelli World Challenge season. Round 18, the final round of GT Cup, is scheduled for Sept. 11-13 at the scenic track in Monterey, California.
The delayed broadcast of the races at Sonoma Raceway will air at 2 p.m. (ET) Sunday, Sept. 6 on CBS Sports Network.
