Two races. 90 minutes. That’s all that stands between Kelly Moss Motorsports and the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama Team and Driver Platinum Cup championships.
A season that already includes 25 total team podium finishes will come down to its finale in Rounds 15 and 16 of the IMSA development series this week at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia
Since Round 1 at Sebring International Raceway, the goal has remained the same for the team – win championships. The team has a two-point lead in the Platinum Cup Team Championship and aone-point lead in the Platinum Cup Driver Championship with young star Colin Thompson atop the standings.
“This thing is going to come down to the very end,” Kelly Moss Vice President Jeff Stone said. “We’ve planned from the very beginning to leave with a championship, and that’s what we’re still planning on. We’re going to take it home.
Unlike many other tracks this season, Kelly Moss was unable to test on the 12-turn, 2.54-mile Road Atlanta circuit. But the team has many years of competitive experience at the track with which to help prepare its drivers.
“We’ve got an awful lot of laps and many years at this track,” Stone said, “and we feel very confident we know how to go quick here.”
Thompson has nine overall podiums this season and six in the last eight rounds, including a sweep of Rounds 7 and 8 at Watkins Glen International.
Just 20 points separate the top four drivers in Platinum Cup entering the finale, with Thompson showing the most consistency. He has finished eighth or better in every race this season.
David Ducote is another consistent Kelly Moss driver. After making his Gold Cup debut at Road America, Ducote has won three of the last four races. Joining him in the Gold Cup will be his father, Wayne Ducote and William Peluchiwski.
Dan Weyland will race alongside Thompson in the Platinum Cup. Weyland had his best finishes of the season at Road Atlanta last year and will look to follow them up with two more solid performances.
Kelly Moss will take the track on Wednesday for two practices. Qualifying will be at 8:35 a.m. (ET) Thursday, Oct. 2, followed by a 45-minute Race 1 at 3:35 p.m. The team will take the track for the final round of action at 11:25 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3.
