David Stone: 1954-2015

Stone_David copyIt is with heavy hearts we share with you that Kelly Moss Motorsports lost its founder, David Stone, Wednesday after a fierce battle with cancer. David attacked his fight against cancer as he did everything, head-on and with dogged determination, never giving up and wringing every ounce out of each day.

David had a lifelong and natural interest in racing but found himself in the construction industry until an opportunity in motorsports presented itself.

This initial opportunity in motorsports came when David started working with Rich Moskalik at Euro Imports, a boutique exotic car dealer in St. Petersburg, Florida. In 1988 David moved to Madison, Wisconsin to help Rich in building and growing Kelly Moss Motorsports.

One thing David realized at a young age was the fastest way to learn was to put your ego on the shelf and expose yourself to the best and brightest minds in that area of interest. Something he continued to do throughout his career, always hiring the most qualified people.

David was instrumental in building Kelly Moss into the powerhouse it is today, including winning multiple championships in multiple series and pioneering the concept of arrive-and-drive programs. This achievement all came while working side-by-side with his brother and best friend Jeff Stone to build the business into a multifaceted and comprehensive street car and motorsports business.

In 2008 David as team manager alongside team owner and friend Scott Tucker, built the highly competitive and successful Level 5 Motorsports. Competing worldwide in the American Le Mans Series, Level 5 Motorsports became one of the most successful privateer teams in sportscar history.

David, his brother Jeff, and many great, dedicated professionals have been fortunate to live and work their dreams all because David followed his instinct and seized an opportunity so many years ago.

David Stone was the heart and soul of Kelly Moss Motorsports and Level 5 Motorsports, and it is with great sadness that we say goodbye and until the next time.

His dream will live on at Kelly Moss through his brother Jeff and his legacy in all of us through his daily mantra…. “It’s not how you start; it’s how you finish.”

A Celebration of Life will be held in Madison at a date to be determined. Please direct any questions you may have to:
